ACADEMIC STAFF ASSEMBLY MEETING MINUTES 272 Bascom Hall Monday, May 8, 2017 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Provost Sarah Mangelsdorf called the meeting to order at 3:32 p.m.
Memorial Resolution for Julie Gray Eden Inoway-Ronnie read the memorial resolution for Julie Gray.
Automatic Consent The Academic Staff Assembly minutes of Monday, April 10, 2017, were approved.
Report: Ad Hoc Committee on Academic Staff Degree Requirements Mara Eisch and Mary Thompson, co-chairs of the Ad Hoc Committee on Academic Staff Degree Requirements, presented the guidelines with suggested revisions from the committee. There is no change for academic staff instructional positions degree requirements. Those remain covered by the institution’s policy, The Minimum Qualifications for Instructional Staff. The proposed changes address the concerns of recruiting a diverse pool for some academic staff positions.
Standing Committee Reports Kevin Niemi, ASEC chair, mentioned that the ASEC report was distributed at the door. ASEC has been working a lot on the Title and Total Compensation study, including putting together an ad hoc committee to offer input to the two academic staff members on the Campus Collaboration Team. They have also been discussing the new system to track performance reviews as well as the transfer of paper personnel files to electronic files. He informed the Assembly that while there had been discussion about a June Assembly meeting that was looking less likely.
Business Nominating Committee Member Motion to approve Karyn Matchey’s appointment to the Nominating Committee (Jim Rogers District #499). Seconded. Approved.
Recommendations from Ad Hoc Committee on Category B Academic Staff Salary Compression Motion to endorse the Recommendations from the Ad Hoc Committee on Category B Academic Staff Salary Compression (Deb Shapiro, ASEC). Seconded. Approved.
Recommendations from Academic Staff Worklife Survey Paper Motion to endorse the Recommendations from the Academic Staff Worklife Survey White Paper (Jenny Dahlberg, ASEC). Seconded. Approved.
Recommendations from Ad Hoc Committee on Academic Staff Degree Requirements Motion to endorse the Recommendations from the Ad Hoc Committee on Academic Staff Degree Requirements including removing the r in the word “searchers” (Mara Eisch District #235). Seconded.
Motion to amend the resolution by adding “or the common practice in a field does not include a degree” to the second bullet (David Parter District #482). Seconded. Amendment failed.
Original motion approved.
Resolution Regarding Transgender Members of the UW-Madison Community Motion to approve Resolution Regarding Transgender Members of the UW-Madison Community (Erin Carrillo District #474). Seconded. Approved.
Provost Report The Provost reported that there was not a lot of new news on the state budget. There have been no discussion about cuts, and the governor’s proposal does include some new funding for UW System. The governor proposed a set of performance metrics that would require UW System schools to be ranked against each other. There has been a lot of discussion around the performance metrics that would be used to distribute these funds.
In regards to the Title and Total Compensation study, she has met with the consultants hired by UW System. Mercer has done a lot of higher education work. The consultants were excited by the information they have received from campus so far.
