Digital Badge Creation Process

This document provides a step-by-step overview of the digital badge creation process.

  1. Badge Ideation & Development

Whether you are still shaping your badge idea or you have a fully developed concept, the Digital Badging Service Team is available for consultation. We can help clarify any questions, provide feedback, and offer guidance on alignment with UW-Madison digital badge policy before you move forward. 

  1. Prepare Your Proposal 

When ready to start your digital badge proposal, you may wish to review Preparing to Request a Digital Badge, which provides a guide for drafting the information needed to submit a badge proposal. 

  1. Submit Your Proposal 

Once drafted, submit your proposal in the Lumen Badges proposal system for review. See Lumen Badges: Overview and System Functionality for an overview of the Lumen Badges proposal system, including how to request access to Lumen if needed. 

You are welcome to contact the Digital Badging Service Team for assistance creating your proposal in Lumen.

  1. Proposal Review & Approval 

Your proposal is reviewed through the digital badge approval process in Lumen. It is first routed to your school, college, or divisional approver. When local approval is complete, it is automatically routed to the Digital Badge Service Team for policy compliance review and final approval. 

Once approved, the Digital Badging Service Team notifies you via email and outlines what happens next. 

  1. Badge Content Draft Creation 

The Digital Badging Service Team begins building your badge by drafting the badge content copy (i.e. badge description and earning criteria) for your review. 

  1. Badge Content Draft Review

You will receive the draft content copy to review. At this stage, you will:

    • Suggest any edits to the content

    • Select a badge image

    • Choose the demonstrated skills associated with the badge

  1. Submit Your Feedback

Once you’ve completed your review and selections, notify the Digital Badging Service Team. 

  1. Badge Creation

Using your finalized badge content, the Digital Badging Service Team creates your badge in Parchment Digital Badges. 

  1. Completion & Training 

After your badge is created, the Digital Badging Service Team contacts you to:

    • Confirm your badge is created and ready to be awarded

    • Provide details on how to access your badge in Parchment Digital Badges

    • Offer training on how to award your badge
