Perceptive Content Fundamentals

Custom Properties

Custom properties are property fields that users can populate with data relating to an Perceptive Content document or project. Custom properties let you store unlimited data to describe a document beyond the standard document keys. You can also create a composite property, which is a single property that contains one or more custom properties. You make these properties available to documents and projects by associating them with document types or project types.

You define a custom property using one of the following data types: composite, strings, numbers/currency, dates, predefined lists for list box controls, user names, and true/false flags. Formatting settings let you control the data entry and display appearance of the custom property for viewing by end-users. Some data types require default values, for others default values are optional.

Creating and managing custom properties requires the Manage Custom Properties privilege unless you are a manager or owner. After you create custom properties, you must associate the custom properties with existing document types or project types before end-users can enter data in, view, or search on the custom properties.

You have the option to make a custom property required. If a custom property is required, the user must enter a value for that property whenever a document is linked or the document type is changed. To learn more about custom properties, re er to the Perceptive Content Administrators Help.

Custom Property Data Types

For date, number, string, or user custom properties, you can use the Sample box to preview the appearance of the custom property values. You can also create a custom property by copying an existing custom property that is similar to the one you want to create and modifying it. To do this, select the existing custom property in the list and click Copy.

You can choose from the following data types when you create a custom property. All custom property types can have a default value or contain an empty (or NULL) value.

Data Type Name Data Type Description Value Restrictions
String Text field Text fields that support all printable ASCII characters within the Single Byte character set. Value can contain up to 128 characters, This limit varies depending on your database platform.
Number Decimal number field Decimal data type display format: Number fields that support both positive and negative numbers up to a limited number of digits. Zeros to the right of the decimal are suppressed. Currency data type display format: Number fields that display as currency defined using one of the ISO 4217 country codes. The default currency setting matches the local settings of the Perceptive Content Client computer. Up to 16 digits. Precision of 15 decimal places.
Date Date A date is stored as a string. The displayed date format is based on the settings chosen when you create the custom property. Not applicable.
Flag Boolean field This data type is always stored as TRUE (1) or FALSE (0). The values that display are based on the settings chosen when creating the custom property. 1 or 0 but the display strings that represent the 1 can be altered.
List Predefined List This data type creates a group of values that a user can select from a list box for the custom property. Not applicable.
User User name This data type allows you to select an Perceptive Content user to populate the custom property. Only Perceptive Content users that currently exist in the implementation.
Composite Inherits types from custom properties A composite property allows the user to enter multiple values for a single property. Values must conform to the data types of the associated custom properties.

If you select a single custom property, the user can add multiple values of the same data type to the composite. The values appear as numbered rows in the Custom Properties pane of the Viewer.

If you select multiple custom properties, the user can add multiple property sets of the composite with separate sets of values for each set. Property sets appear as separate hierarchies in the Custom Properties pane of the Viewer
