This document provides information on how to trigger automatically ordered captions for your media in Kaltura. This will affect media in Canvas and MediaSpace.
Overview of Ordering Captions and Audio Descriptions
Starting in the Fall Semester for 2026, all new media that is published or embedded in Canvas and MediaSpace will trigger a captions and audio description order. This document will go over the various triggers that will activate the order.
The goal of the ordering system is to make ordering happen via the most common methods of sharing media. The methods that add captions and extended audio descriptions to a video are as follows:

If you change a video’s publication setting in Kaltura MediaSpace from Private to Unlisted or Published.
Exceptions to Ordering Triggers
There are several ways that videos will not trigger a caption and extended audio description order. These are the following reasons why your video would not trigger an order:

If your video is left as Private.

If your video has already received Human Captions and Extended Audio Descriptions, it will not trigger a second time.

If you are part of the McBurney Exception Group which receives faster turnaround time on their media.

Your video has been approved by the Office of Compliance to not receive captions and/or audio descriptions because these accessibility features result in a fundamental alteration.

Foreign Language Videos
Videos that are not in English will not automatically generate human captions and computer audio descriptions. These features must be ordered directly from the vendor.
