Canvas - Adding Your Syllabus to Canvas [UW-Madison]
There are several options for making a syllabus available in a Canvas course. Below are some of the ways to do this as an instructor or staff member.
Preparing your syllabus
UW-Madison’s Course Syllabus resources can help you get started with crafting your syllabus. The Division of Teaching and Learning offers this resource:
-
Course Syllabi at UW–Madison: This webpage offers information on the core components to include in your syllabus, and a Microsoft Word document you can use as a template.
Using a course page or module for your syllabus
Some instructors choose to create their syllabus as a page in Canvas and set it as the course homepage. You could also add this to a module, such as a welcome module.
Setting your syllabus as the course homepage
-
Create a new page in your Canvas course.
-
Type or paste your syllabus into the content editor (see the Add Content section of the “Create a new page” instructions in step 1).
-
Adding your syllabus to a module
-
Create a new module in your course.
Using the Syllabus tool
Some instructors may choose to use the built-in Canvas Syllabus tool to deliver syllabus content.
There are three parts to the Syllabus tool: Syllabus description, Course Summary, and the sidebar.
-
The Syllabus description area has space for syllabus content, welcome content, and so on. You can expand your entire syllabus file in that section or you can include it as a link.
-
The Course Summary section is automatically generated based on course assignments and course calendar events.
-
The sidebar displays the course Calendar as well as information pertaining to grade weighting. Clicking the date will take you to the corresponding location in the Course Summary.
