Recommend Admission for Alternative Program

This document provides directions for how to request a program change for an application.

Program Change Policy

To recommend a submitted application for an alternative program, there are a few conditions that must be met:

  • The application may not already be recommended for admission to the Graduate School. (In other words, the application may not have a G60 or G61 already applied.)
  • The application may not already be withdrawn (G50, G54, G57, G58, G59) or denied (G90, G40).
  • This process must first be initiated by a graduate coordinator in the program to which the applicant originally applied.
  • The alternative program must agree to recommend that application for admission.

Please note that the process described below is to recommend an application for admission. This process is not meant to pass the application along to a different program for consideration; it is understood that you have spoken to the alternative program prior to this process and the alternative program has agreed to recommend the applicant for admission to the program.

How to Request a Program Change in Slate

  1. Search for the application in Slate and navigate to the correct Application tab.
  2. Select the "Recommend Admission for Alternative Program (G60)" link, located just below the application information as highlighted in the screenshot below.

  3. In the new tab, fill out the *GS Recommend Admission for Alternative Program form, as shown in the screenshot below.

  4. The next step depends on if you are the graduate coordinator of the alternative program, or if someone else is the designated graduate coordinator for the alternative program.
    • If you are the graduate coordinator of the alternative program, the application will receive a recommendation code (G60 or G61) and the request will be reviewed by the Graduate School.
    • If you are not the graduate coordinator of the alternative program, an email will be sent to the alternative program's graduate coordinator with directions to either confirm or deny the program is recommending the application for admission. If the alternative program's graduate coordinator confirms recommendation, the application will receive a recommendation code (G60 or G61) and the request will be reviewed by the Graduate School.

  5. Once all appropriate forms are completed, the Graduate School will approve or deny the request. The Graduate School will check the following:
    • The person who completed the form is the designated Graduate Coordinator for the original program
    • The Graduate Coordinator for the alternative program has approved the program change (or is the same as the Graduate Coordinator of the original program)
    • The new program selected makes sense and is correct (i.e., the Graduate School may reach out for additional explanation if the alternative program is a remarkably different program than the original program).
    • The Graduate School has no further questions for the Graduate Coordinator(s) of the original or alternative program
  6. If the Program Change request is approved by the Graduate School, Slate rules will run and update the application so it is recommended to the new alternative program.

*Note: Once you have submitted the GS Recommend Admission for Alternative Program form, you will be able to monitor the status of the Program Change Request by searching for the application in Slate and looking at the notice posted as shown in the screenshot below:
