Office 365 (Apple Mail / Calendar) - Configure Apple Mail / Calendar on Mac OS 10.8

This document contains instructions on using a non-Microsoft email client, such as Apple Mail or Thunderbird. Microsoft does not recommend these clients for use with Office 365, and there are often significant limitations in client functionality as a result.

Because of this, the DoIT Help Desk is only able to offer best effort support for these clients, and certain issues may require the use of a Microsoft client in order to be resolved. For more information on Office 365 client support, please see: Office 365 - Which clients/protocols will be supported?.

This document explains how to connect to the Office 365 service.

Configure Apple Mail/Calendar for Office 365

  1. Open up the Mac Mail client
  2. If you've opened Mac Mail before, please navigate to  Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts . If you have not, skip to step 3.

    Once on the accounts page, click the Plus button in the bottom left to add a new account

  3. On the following page it will also ask for your account credentials:

    • Full Name: your name
    • Email Address:-
      • NetID Account: Enter
      • Service Account: Enter
      • Note: if you don't know whether you are attempting to configuring a NetID account or a Service account, please contact your domain administrator or the DoIT HelpDesk.

    • Note: You SHOULD NOT be prompted to or enter your password into Microsoft Exchange. Password should only be entered through UW Madison's secure NetID login portal.

      Click Continue

  4. You will now be redirected to UW Madison's secure NetID login portal.

    Enter the required login information described below and then verify your login with DUO.

    • Username
      • For NetID Account(e.g., enter:
        • (
      • For Service Account( enter:
        • (
    • Password: Enter the password associated with the account you entered above.

    • Note: if you don't know whether you are attempting to configuring a NetID account or a Service account, please contact your domain administrator or the DoIT HelpDesk.

  5. This will now bring you to an account summary page in which may choose to include Contacts/Calendars

    • If you intend on configuring your account in Apple Calendar, make sure the  Calendars  option is checked
    • Click  Create  to finalize creating the account
  6. Your account is now configured

    Note: You may need to restart Mail for your mail to be synchronized

    For those of you who had to go to the accounts page to create your Office 365 account, you will be sitting at the accounts screen. If so, click the red X located at the top left corner of this screen

  7. One final step is required: disable client side spam filtering. After starting Apple Mail, it is very important that you disable this feature before using Apple Mail.

Important: Depending on the size and amount of emails you have in your account, Apple Mail may require some time to completely download all of your mail (and other data) the first time you load Apple Mail after configuring your account.

Configure Access to the Campus Directory (Whitepages)

Remember: the Global Address List (GAL) will only contain Office 365 accounts. Therefore, you may still need access to the Campus Directory (Whitepages) to find the person you are searching for.

Use these instructions to configure the Campus Directory (Whitepages) within this client.
