Is training a required part of the account/access setup process for REDCap?
Users requesting a REDCap account are required to complete a brief interactive training about the basic usage of REDCap. This training includes interactive quiz questions that provide the correct responses for each question, so make sure to update any incorrect responses before continuing to the next question.
Training is also required for UW-Madison users who have a NetID when they have high-level permissions for Project Design & Setup and User Rights. Refer to the table below for links to self-enroll in these training courses.
Although it is not specific to REDCap, current HIPAA training is required for access because it contains Protected Health Information (PHI). Refer to the UW-Madison Office of Compliance HIPAA Training website for a link to the Canvas training for UW-Madison staff.
External collaborators have the following options for HIPAA completion:
- Provide proof of training from their institution/organization
- If they have a UW NetID, they can take the UW-Madison HIPAA training previously mentioned
- If they do not have a UW NetID, they can complete the external training linked from the website above
Additional training related to using a 21 CFR Part 11 validated project is required for the FDA instance. The training includes, but is not limited to, Change Management. More information is provided at the project team meetings with the REDCap Validation team.
How does one initiate the account/access setup process for REDCap?
The account/access setup process for REDCap begins with the submission of a single access request form. It is highly recommended that supervisors submit the request form on behalf of their staff to ensure accurate completion.
I was emailed a link to the training for REDCap, may I forward it to my colleague for them to complete training too?
In most cases, the links provided to you in an email are unique to you and should not be shared with others. This includes the brief interactive training when an account is first requested and any links for a survey asking you to notify us upon completion of a training.
The Project Design & Setup Training, User Rights Training and HIPAA links are for self-enrollment and may be shared with others.
What are the titles, brief summaries, durations, and modalities of the training courses for REDCap?

How can I tell which training courses I have to self-enroll in?
Project Design & Setup Training - Use this link to tell whether you have already self-enrolled
User Rights Training - Use this link to tell whether you have already self-enrolled
UW-Madison HIPAA (Users may not have to self-enroll for HIPAA as departmental staff that are part of the Health Care Components (HCC) are automatically added to HIPAA training each year).
Are training courses available for review outside of the account/access setup process?
Yes, the training courses mentioned above, except for the REDCap Basic - Interactive Training, can be completed outside of the account request process.
Are there ways to supplement the required training courses?
Yes, and they include:
- Video presentation: Introductory Research Data Management with SMPH REDCap (Basics)
- Video presentation: SMPH REDCap Surveys
- Training provided by the project owner or delegate
- Applications User Group Meetings (UGMs) for continued learning (refer to Applications User Group Meeting (UGM) Recordings for more information)
- Publicly available REDCap training videos
Is there a way to look up whether someone has completed REDCap training and when?
Yes, you can see look up a user using this REDCap Training Completion link. Note: If you have completed training and it is not reflected on this page contact REDCap Administrators to notify them you have completed the training. The dates and statues listed on this page are based on when an Administrator manually looked up the training. They are not automatically updated when you complete the respective training(s).
If my account/access needs have changed, are additional training courses required?
It depends on the access you have been granted. If you have been granted the Project Design and Setup or User Rights access and you have not previously had this access on any REDCap projects, you will most likely need to complete the training associated with those rights. REDCap Administrators check the users with these high-level access rights monthly to ensure these users have completed training.
If my account/access was terminated for REDCap, do I have to complete the training again to reinstate my account/access?
If your account/access was terminated due to inactivity, then you may have to complete current HIPAA training and/or the REDCap Basic User - Interactive Training if you have never completed it before.
Who do I contact with questions about the training during or after completing it?
Submit your questions to the Research Applications Support Portal for general REDCap questions.
