HelioCampus AC - DESL Direct Evidence of Student Learning [UW-Madison]

Direct evidence of student learning (DESL) is an assessment approach that allows instructors to evaluate learning based on student performance on tasks directly connected to course learning outcomes. DESL is currently only intended for use in credit-based courses, and will not be accessible in noncredit courses.

Direct Evidence of Student Learning (DESL), which is accessed through a Canvas course, allows instructors to link Canvas assignments to HelioCampus AC Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs). Please note that CLOs flow into HelioCampus AC from Lumen. Students demonstrate their learning through assignments, quizzes, exams, and more by intentionally linking direct measures to course learning outcomes. Instructors are able to obtain clear, compelling and actionable information about how well students are doing using the DESL assessment data. DESL helps instructors answer some of the most common – and critical – questions about their students’ learning:

  • Are my students learning what I expect?
  • What concepts need further explanation or delineation?
  • Are the course activities aligned with the learning outcomes?
  • Overall, how will I know that learning has taken place in my course?

For all non-technical questions regarding DESL, contact one of the Senior Assessment Coordinators in the Office of the Provost, Regina Lowery (regina.lowery@wisc.edu) or Mary Thompson (mary.thompson@wisc.edu). For all technical questions, contact the DoIT Help Desk (help@doit.wisc.edu) or review the HelioCampus AC - DESL - Getting Started with DESL Assignment Linking or the HelioCampus AC - DESL - Frequently Asked Questions.
