Learn@UW - Captioning Transcripts, and Audio Descriptions at UW-Madison - Getting Started [UW-Madison]

This guide on the Information Technology website, provides information on captions, UW-Madison's media captioning options, and explains how UW-Madison users can access these services.

To learn about captions, transcripts, and audio descriptions see the Create accessible video and audio content guide.

How do I add captions, transcripts, or audio descriptions to content?

Do it yourself

There are free tools available that make it relatively easy to caption your own video, but they often need editing for accuracy. Editing machine-generated captions to meet accessibility standards can be very labor-intensive, especially for longer videos. Instructions for adding machine based captions in Kaltura can be found here: Kaltura - Ordering Machine Captions for Media in Kaltura MediaSpace [UW-Madison].  Additional Options: Captioning your video or transcribing audio (for free)

Outsource to professional services

UW-Madison has contracts with two companies that provide professional captioning services: 3PlayMedia and CaptionSync. Their services include relatively seamless integrations with YouTube, Canvas, and other platforms. Learn more:
