This data point provides a summary of high school academic performance through placing students in one of three groups based on similar grade performance and course rigor. Admitted students are not equally distributed between these hierarchical group. As of 1/29/2025, admitted first-year students are distributed across the three academic groups as follows:  

• Group 1: (34.0% of admits) This group has achieved all A/A- Grades taking rigorous courses across 4-5 course subjects. Course subject areas include English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and World Language

• Group 2: (33.5%) Most of the students in this group have achieved A- grades with rigor across 4 subjects. Some students may have achieved higher grades with slightly lower rigor or slightly lower grades with slightly greater rigor.

• Group 3: (32.4%) This group contains all remaining admits. Most students in this group have achieved A-/AB grades with rigor across 2-4 subjects. 

It is appropriate to note that access to high course rigor is not consistent among our admitted students and that some schools do not offer as many opportunities for advanced course work. As a result, not every student will have an opportunity to achieve at the highest academic performance and course rigor groups. The Academic Performance and Course Rigor Group should be used in conjunction with other aspects of student achievement.

• The Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC) is a collaborative effort between the University of Wisconsin-Madison and industry. They work to improve the safety, efficiency, and productivity of industrial refrigeration systems and technologies, realizing this goal by conducting applied research, delivering knowledge transfer, and providing technical assistance. Although efforts are focused on industrial refrigeration systems that utilize anhydrous ammonia, they also work with systems that use other refrigerants.

The final day on which a student can match to an Auto-Match opportunity. It is also the final day a student's imported SIS data will update in an opportunity's application grid. (The data will freeze at 11:59 PM on this day.) Please note that:

• Students cannot see the Internal End Date; it is only for administrators.
• Every opportunity must have an Internal End Date that ends before the start of Cycle Management of the next year (the process of opening the new General Application for the year.)
• If you change the Internal End Date after it has passed to a date in the future, students will start matching to your opportunity (if an Auto-Match) and student imported SIS data will begin to update again.
• Internal End Dates should be set as the same day or after the date the Public End Date is set to.

This is a state in ARROW.  Studies in this state will undergo pre-review by an assigned IRB staff reviewer.  The staff reviewer can perform multiple activities in this state, including sending the application for consultant review, sending the application to ancillary committee, completing pre-review checklist, and scheduling the application for an IRB meeting.

This is a state in ARROW.  Studies in this state were previously reviewed by the IRB and modifications were requested.  The response from the study team requires review by the IRB to determine whether the study team has adequately addressed the IRB's requests.  In this state, the IRB staff reviewer can send the modification response to an IRB member or schedule it for review at a full meeting.

This is an activity in ARROW that allows the IRB staff reviewer to suspend a study in the approved state (for example, due to report of an unanticipated problem for which the IRB determined involved risk of harm to subjects).

KCS (Knowledge-Centered Service) is a knowledge/information management model. It focuses on knowledge being created, used, reviewed, and edited by the same team that is resolving the issues, rather than a parallel knowledge management team.

A Department ID is the sequence of numbers that identifies a specific campus department, program, or entity. Historically, the Department ID was known as a "UDDS," which stands for "Unit, Division, Department, Subdepartment." This term is still in use in some resources, so we are including it in this glossary listing.

In more practical terms, a Department ID/UDDS is the unique combination of letters and numbers that identify the division, department, and possibly subdepartment, associated with a particular personnel, research, financial, or other activity or transaction.

EXAMPLE:  The full Department ID for a particular Letters & Science Department would be written as : 48XXXX.

"48" stands for "College of Letters & Science"

"XXXX" are the four numbers that identify the specific department, program, project, or other administrative entity.

LCA addresses the environmental aspects and potential environmental impacts (e.g. use of resources and the environmental consequences of releases) throughout a product's life cycle from raw material acquisition through production, use, end-of-life treatment, recycling and final disposal (i.e. cradle-to-grave). Located at 365transition.wisc.edu, the Office 365 Transition Website is the first stop for those who are interested to know more about the transition. It provides general info on everything from the project history and the business case to the Office 365 Team roster and announcements to campus.

Office 365 Video is an intranet website portal where people can post and view videos. It's a streaming video service that's available with SharePoint Online in Office 365. It's a great place to share videos of executive communications or recordings of classes, meetings, presentations, or training sessions, for example. Office 365 Video displays a thumbnail image of each video on the site. You just select a thumbnail to view a particular video.

Office Online (previously Office Web Apps) is an online office suite offered by Microsoft as a part of Office 365, which allows users to create and edit files using lightweight, web browser-based versions of Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. The offering also includes Outlook, People, Calendar and OneDrive for Business, all of which are accessible from a unified app switcher (Outlook on the web).

Typically, when you use a Microsoft Exchange Server account (Office 365 account), your email messages, calendar, and other items are delivered to and saved on the server. You can configure Outlook to keep a local copy of your items on your computer in an Outlook data file that is named an offline Outlook Data File (.ost). This allows you to use Cached Exchange Mode or to work offline when a connection to the Office 365 (Exchange) computer may not be possible or wanted. The .ost file is synchronized with the Office 365 (Exchange) computer when a connection is available.

OneDrive for Business is Office 365's file hosting service. It allows users to upload and sync files to a cloud storage and then access them from a web browser or their local device.

OneNote is an electronic version of a paper notebook where you can write down notes, thoughts, ideas, scribbles, reminders, and all kinds of other information. Unlike the traditional document page format of other programs such as word-processing or spreadsheet programs, OneNote offers a free-form canvas where you can type, write, or draw notes in the form of text, graphics, and images wherever and however you want them.

The OneNote Class Notebook is an Office 365 app that helps instructors set up OneNote in their class. This app will create a class notebook, which includes three types of sub-notebooks: Student Notebooks, Content Library, and Collaboration Space.

In Microsoft 365, permissions can enable an individual to access another individual's mail, calendars, and contacts. For example, if User A wanted the ability to modify events in User B's calendar, User B would need to assign read/write/modify permissions to User A. ResearchDrive

Research teams initially determine which IRB to submit their study to. During pre-reivew, the IRB office may determine that the study should be reviewed by another IRB.  This activity, available only to the IRB director, can move the study between the MR and HS boards, as well as to the SBS and ED IRBs. 

Once a submission has been scheduled for review at an IRB meeting, IRB Office staff can reassign the primary or secondary reviewer responsible for conducting the review, should scheduling or other conflicts arise. 

Studies in pre-review are assigned to a specific IRB staff reviewer.  If necessary due to workload, vacations, or any other issue, the IRB director can reassign that study to a different staff reviewer using this activity.

Some studies undergo a facilitated review rather than a full review, for example, studies sent to the NCI CIRB.  IRB staff will record the facilitated review decision using this activity.  This activity moves the study to the "awaiting correspondence" state.

During or after an IRB meeting, IRB staff use this activity to record the outcome of the review (e.g. approved, deferred, etc.).

Reversal of the natural direction in which contents flow through a tube or a cavity in the body. During rumination, rumen contents are regurgitated through the esophagus in the mouth for further mastication.

A study that has been assigned to an IRB meeting may need to be removed from the agenda for various reasons (new information has come to light, the study team needs to make additional revisions, etc.).  This activity allows IRB staff to remove a previously scheduled item from an agenda and send it back to pre-review.

Handling Information

This is an end state in ARROW.  Reportable events in this state have been acknowledged by the IRB, but no further action is needed and therefore, the reportable event is considered resolved. 

In Office 365, a resource account is a non-person account that can be classified as either "room" or "equipment". Examples can include meeting/conference rooms, audio-visual equipment, or vacation calendars. Individuals must be granted permissions to interact with a resource account. More details.

Data is classified as Restricted if protection of the data is required by law or regulation or UW-Madison is required to self-report to the government and/or provide notice to the individual if the data is inappropriately accessed. See UW-Madison Data Classifications.

The first two stomachs of a ruminant comprised of the reticulum and the rumen. A microbial population lives in the rumen and enable the cow to digest dietary fiber. Reviewer Notes are notes made in an application by IRB staff. Reviewer notes labeled IRB Question require a response from the study team. Only IRB staff can create Reviewer Notes in ARROW.

If new information comes to light, or changes are made such that a previously exempted study no longer meets the criteria for exemption, the IRB director may revoke the exemption.  This moves the exemption to the "closed" state.

Salesforce started in 1999 in San Francisco and quickly grew in the 2000s to be an industry leader in Customer Relationship Management (CRM). Salesforce was originally designed as a business-to-business (B2B) application to help companies improve their sales processes, and by extension, maximize their sales. It developed an Education platform in 2016. 

All Salesforce users agreed to the terms of the Recruitment CRM Compliance Form for UW–Madison prior to gaining access to Salesforce. All users are responsible for continuing to comply with the form's terms for the duration of their access. Failure to comply will result in revocation of access.

A lookup field in Salesforce is used to find other records in Salesforce to build relationships between records.  For example, in a contact record one uses a lookup field to find and relate another record such as an organization or community to the contact.

A UW-Madison employee who has agreed to follow the terms of the Recruitment CRM Compliance Form for UW–Madison and has been granted access to OAR's Salesforce platform.

The smartform application allows users to save their work before exiting the application. Users should periodically save their completed work in the smartform application in order to avoid losing any work due to the potential for timing out of the system or when the user needs to complete the application at a later time.  

A reuseable collection of settings that defines scanner parameters. A scanner profile sets things like DPI (dots per inch) and Simplex (single-side) /Duplex (double-sided) on scans. Scanner profiles are located and set in capture profiles.

This is an activity in ARROW that allows the IRB staff reviewer to schedule a submission for an upcoming IRB meeting.  Once the IRB staff reviewer schedules the submission for a meeting, the submission moves to the IRB Pre-Meeting state. 

This is a state in ARROW.  Studies in this state must undergo review by the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research Scientific Review Committee (ICTR SRC), the UW Cancer Center Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee (PRMC) or the Clinical and Translational Research Core  Protocol Implementation Review (CTRC PIR) before moving on to the IRB Pre-Review state.

An abbreviation for the role of the Scientific Review committee.  Scientific Review Committee activities can only be executed by their respective coordinators.

The movement of a material from one place to another. Secretion is often required to move a material to the place where it can be excreted. Examples of materials secreted include all materials excreted (see Excretion above), plus enzymes, hormones and saliva. The IRB Submission Manager reviews all new submissions to ARROW for completeness and any other administrative concerns (incorrect/missing documentation,etc.).  Any identified issues are sent from the submission manager to the study team via this activity.

In Office 365, this permission allows users other than the mailbox owner to use the mailbox to send messages. After this permission is assigned to a delegate, any message that a delegate sends from this mailbox will appear as if it was sent by the mailbox owner. However, this permission doesn't allow a delegate to sign in to the user's mailbox.

This is an activity in ARROW that allows the IRB staff reviewer to send a change of protocol for an exemption to an ancillary review committee.  For example, if an exemption initially required VA R&D Committee review and a change is being made to the exemption, the IRB staff reviewer could send the change to the VA R&D Committee for review.

This is an activity in ARROW that allows the IRB staff reviewer to send formal correspondence from the IRB (e.g. IRB approval letter) to the study team.  The study team members with email/edit access will receive notification that formal correspondence has been sent that then the study team can access the document(s) in their ARROW workspace.

This is an activity in ARROW that allows the IRB staff reviewer to send issues, including reviewer notes, requests for modifications and clarifications, to the study team to address.  This is a transitional activity that moves a submission to the Issues Pending state.

In Office 365, this permission allows a delegate to use this mailbox to send messages. However, after this permission is assigned to a delegate, the From address in any message sent by the delegate indicates that the message was sent by the delegate on behalf of the mailbox owner.

This is an activity in ARROW in the Exemption Granted state.  This activity allows the IRB staff reviewer to send a revised exemption determination to the study team.

This is an activity in ARROW that allows the IRB staff reviewer to send full board review applications to ancillary committees for review.  All ancillary committee approvals must be in place before scheduling for IRB meeting can occur. 

This is an activity in ARROW that allows the IRB staff reviewer to send modifications made by the study team to an IRB member to review.  This is a transitional activity that moves a submission from the IRB Review of Modification Response to the IRB Member Modification Review state.

This is an activity in ARROW that allows the PI or POC to send an application back to the Pre-Submission state from the Withdrawn state. For example, the PI withdrew an application from the IRB review process and now wants to start the submission process again using the previously withdrawn application.

This is an activity in ARROW that allows the IRB submission manager to send a submission to Preliminary Review Session (PRS) review. Once the IRB submission manager executes this activity, the submission moves to the PRS review state.

Data is classified as Sensitive if the loss of confidentiality, integrity or availability of the data could have a serious adverse effect on university operations, assets or individuals. See UW-Madison Data Classifications.

Standard deviation (SD) is a measure of the dispersion of a set of data from its mean. If the data points are further from the mean, there is higher deviation within the data set. The SD shares the same unit as the mean. The SD is calculated as the square root of variance by determining the variation between each data point relative to the mean. The symbol for standard deviation is σ (the Greek letter sigma). Approximately, in a normal distribution,
38% of all observations are within ± 0.5 SD units of the mean;
68% of all observations are within ± 1 SD units of the mean;
95% of all observations are within ± 2 SD units of the mean;
99% of all observations are within ± 3 SDunits of the mean.

Staple is a term for a staple added to a printed packet or book, commonly in the upper left corner or along the left side of a booklet.

In ARROW, the IRB review process is divided into different parts, called States. The State an application is in will change as it moves through the review process. The list of actions a user can take for a submission will vary according to the state it is in.

Titles in the Student Assistant title group are used for graduate students who: hold a fellowship, scholarship or traineeship; hold an appointment which is intended primarily to further the education and training of the student; are employed to assist with research training or other academic programs or projects; and/or have been assigned teaching responsibilities in an instructional department under the supervision of a faculty member.
