H5P Interactive Canvas and Web Content
What is H5P?
H5P is a hosted service that lets authors create interactive modules that may be embedded into a course hosted on Extension’s instance of Canvas, or a website hosted on extension.wisc.edu. Interactive educational content is secondary and supplemental to primary web content like articles and posts.
Licenses
Extension Educational Technology Support (ETS) has a 10 author license. These licenses are limited to UW-Madison Division of Extension employees. License seats will be limited to active projects and not for an indefinite amount of time.
A license will be assigned to an individual for the purpose of creating the H5P content on a temporary basis. Once the content has been created, the license is removed from the individual so someone else may use it to create content. Content created by an individual is stored and accessible for use after the license is removed. Any modifications will require reassignment of a license for the time needed to make the changes.
The purpose of this process is to:
- Ensure quality educational and engaging content is created using this service.
- Allow ETS to manage the limited storage space allocated to our licenses.
- Ensure content created by an author is available regardless of the author’s employment status.

Contact Christine Rybak (crrybak@wisc.edu) to arrange a consultation, brief training, and license.
Accessibility
H5P allows an author to create many different types of interactive content, not all of them meet accessibility requirements. Only those content types that are accessible and maintained by the core team as identified by H5P’s content type recommendations will be allowed into a Canvas course or web site.
Support
ETS supports H5P authors by providing access to an author license for content creation and consultation on creating quality content. ETS will also support content creators in the process of getting their content into a Canvas course or Extension hosted website. A short training on Extension specific guidelines and practices will be required for first time users. A community of practice will be available via Teams for authors to communicate with ETS and colleagues working on H5P content.
ETS does not have the staff resources to train or build H5P for content creators. Content creators are expected to use the following resources by H5P to create content.
