Ending Employment - Retirement
Employees who are planning to retire should consult the information in this article.
Steps to Take Before Retiring
1) Plan for Retirement
Employees who are planning to retire should visit the Office of Human Resources' Planning for Retirement website. Employees will find information regarding how to plan for retirement, how to register for informational sessions, Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) benefits, Health Insurance and other benefits at retirement, as well as information for beyond retirement (e.g. rehired annuitants).
2) Apply for Emeritus Status (If Applicable)
Emeritus status is an honorary designation conferred upon retirees to recognize their contributions and accomplishments over their university careers. Requirements include completion of ten or more years of distinguished service at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and permanent employee status at the University of Wisconsin–Madison with eligibility to receive an annuity from the Wisconsin Retirement System. Emeritus status is available to academic staff, university staff, and faculty. Recommendations begin at the department level and proceed through the Dean's office to the Office of the Chancellor.
3) Complete Divisional Offboarding
When an employee leaves the Division of Extension a series of processes and decisions need to take place. The offboarding process below helps to reduce the change of any misunderstandings before and after the employee moves on. Utilize the checklists below any time an employee is leaving Extension to assist with a smooth offboarding.
